Alabama's football program grosses $54 million a year. Estimated profits from that are $32 million. That money does more than help the football and other athletic programs -- millions also go to academic programs at the University of Alabama.
The Sept. 1 issue of Forbes Magazine's cover story is about Nick Saban, who became the football coach at the University of Alabama in 2007. Forbes billed him as "the most powerful coach in sports." The story is by Monte Burke.
Saban, with his agent, James E. Sexton II, negotiated an eight-year, $32 million contract, at the time, the highest salary ever paid to a college coach. It remains among the highest and is bigger than all but a handful of NFL coaching salaries. His deal includes, among other perks, 25 hours of private use of a university airplane, two cars, and a country club membership, extras that make his annual compensation closer to $5 million a year..." the article in Forbes said.
