Sugar Bowl! 'Bama Favorded by 10.5

What Alabama has to do to win: Run the ball until Utah can’t stand it anymore, and then run some more. The Crimson Tide has a big advantage up front with its line and with its backs Glen Coffee and Mark Ingram. The Crimson Tide does not turn the ball over and it just needs to grind. The other key will be to find a wide receiver to trust besides Julio Jones. If I am Utah, and a third-down play comes up, there are two defenders on Jones, the splendid Alabama freshman receiver. Do not let him make plays.

The Crimson Tide has a thick defensive playbook with blitz after blitz and Utah is going to see things it has not seen all year.

Opening point spread: Alabama by 10.5 (46.5)

Prediction: Alabama 37, Utah 7

MVP: Alabama RB Glen Coffee

No. 2 Florida is a 10-point Favorite

Alabama has pushed aside all comers on its way to a perfect regular season, climbed to the top of the rankings and stuck around for quite awhile.

Now, it's back to Square One for team No. 1: As an underdog in the Georgia Dome.

No. 2 Florida is a 10-point favorite to topple the top-ranked Crimson Tide Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game in Atlanta, where 'Bama opened the season as an underdog to Clemson.

"I ain't worried about that at all," Tide cornerback Javier Arenas said. "It's been like that the whole season, starting with Clemson and going to Georgia. You're accustomed to it now."

The Iron Bowl

Auburn (5-6) at Alabama (11-0), 3:30 EST CBS

Why to watch: In Alabama, everyone talks about this game for 365 days out of the year. Think that’s an overstatement? Ask any of the sports talk hosts and this game and/or this rivalry will bring in the callers every day, every show. So while this year’s Iron Bowl really doesn’t matter on a national scale, even if Alabama loses it’ll play for the national title if it beats Florida in the SEC Championship, it’s still huge to Tide fans who’ve had to hear about the six game losing streak in the series for, well, six years. That’s a long, long time when it’s being talked about and brought up day after day after day. But for the recently suffering Tide faithful, this appears to be when everything is changing. Auburn is a mess, with the offensive coordinator issues killing what should’ve been a big year, and a defense that’s doing what it can, but isn’t doing enough over a string of five losses in the last six games. It’s officially freakout time for the Tigers fans. Nick Saban appears to be building a juggernaut, LSU isn’t all that bad, even in a down year, and Arkansas and Ole Miss are improving. Meanwhile, Auburn’s window of opportunity to do anything really, really big, like be in the yearly hunt for the national title, might be slammed shut. However, with one big win over the No. 1 team in the nation, Auburn will be bowl eligible, the momentum won’t have shifted over to Tuscaloosa quite yet, there will be another 365 days of smack talk to be had. So sure, the game might not really mean anything, but it also means everything. (Sorry … the clichés start flowing around rivalry time.)

Why Auburn might win: Alabama might have great special teams, but Auburn’s return game is just good enough to change the momentum at a moment’s notice, or pull away if the Tigers get on an early roll. Kick returner Tristan Davis and punt returner Robert Dunn are special, and they might be the ones who can kickstart an otherwise dead offense at times against the nasty Bama D. For all of Auburn’s issues, the defense has still been tough throughout the year. Alabama might be great, but it doesn’t have Oklahoma’s offense; it’s not going to throw 60 on the board.

Why Alabama might win: The Auburn offense is sort of like the economy. Everyone’s trying everything to get it started, and all the efforts just seem to make things go backwards. It’s not like the attack is suddenly going to find itself this week against a very rested, very motivated defense that’s allowing nothing on the ground, just 256 yards per game overall, and is allowing a mere 12.55 points per game. It’s going to take something special for Auburn to win, so if Alabama can play the Tigers evenly on special teams and in the turnover margin, it should be off to Atlanta with a 12-0 record.

Who to watch: John Parker Wilson could turn out to be the offensive leader for a national title team (really, Bama will play for it all no matter what if it beats Florida), but if the Tide loses this week, he’ll be forever known as the quarterback who lost to Auburn three times. He wasn’t bad in the 2006 loss, throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns before giving away the game-sealing pick, but he struggled in last season’s defeat completing 12-of-26 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. While he’s been good this year, he hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in his last four games and hasn’t thrown one in five of his last six outings. Meanwhile, he has rushed for four touchdowns in the last four games, and most importantly, the team keeps on winning.

What will happen: Welcome to Alabama’s cathartic exhale six years in the making. Saban and the Tide won’t be looking to make a statement; they just want the win. However, the defense will keep the Tiger attack from doing much of anything past the first quarter, while the Tide attack will get all the parts working early on. Auburn will hang around for about 40 minutes, and then the last 20 will be all about Bama fans enjoying the long weight being lifted off their program’s back.

Mississippi at Alabama

Mississippi at Alabama

KICKOFF: Saturday, 3:30 ET

SERIES: Alabama leads 44-9-2

2008 RANKINGS: Rebels: offense 46th (4th SEC), pass 54th (5th), run 49th (4th), defense 53rd (11th), pass 89th (12th), run 35th (9th); Crimson Tide: offense 52nd (5th SEC), pass 104th (11th), run 15th (1st), defense 10th (2nd), pass 66th (10th), run 2nd (1st)

POLLS: Alabama (2nd AP, 2nd coaches)

PREDICTION: Alabama 20-14

KEYS TO THE GAME: The Rebels nearly upset the Crimson Tide last year, falling 27-24 at home, but this Alabama team is on another level. Alabama is outscoring its opponents by 20 points a game even after a close shave with Kentucky last week. The Rebels, who had an extra week to prepare, must take better care of the football to have a chance. They are averaging a healthy 29.2 points per game, but they are minus-6 in turnover margin, having lost five fumbles and thrown 10 interceptions. The success of Alabama's offense can be traced back to its offensive line. Left tackle Andre Smith was out last week with an illness. But he's back, and as long as the veteran front line — a group that Saban has put so much responsibility for leadership on — the rest of the offense can be expected to work just fine. The big stat: The Tide leads the league in time of possession, at just over 33 minutes per game.

FAST FACTS: Rebels — Senior LB Tony Fein is averaging eight tackles over the last three games ... Freshman RB Brandon Bolden leads the Rebels with 297 rushing yards, an indication of how Ole Miss doesn't overload any one back ... The defense is allowing opponents to complete 65.5 percent of their throws. No other SEC team allows even 60 percent. Crimson Tide — The defense is holding opponents to 50.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks second nationally ... Alabama is 9-2 under Nick Saban when it holds opponents to 100 rushing yards or less ... Alabama has scored on its opening possession in four of six games this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Rebels

DE Greg Hardy — The standout junior, who led the SEC with 10 sacks last year, took heat for a lackluster effort against South Carolina. He still leads the Rebels with two and a half sacks and has three and a half tackles for loss.
QB Jevan Snead — The sophomore transfer from Texas is completing just 55.2 percent of his throws, with nine TDs and nine interceptions. But he's averaging 212 passing yards per game, which ranks third in the SEC.
S Jamarca Sanford — He is averaging 9.3 tackles per game after notching 13 in the loss to South Carolina.

Crimson Tide

RB Glen Coffee — Coffee is the SEC's most productive running back. With 708 yards rushing and five touchdowns, he leads Arkansas's Michael Smith by 109 yards. Coffee is averaging 7.9 yards per attempt.
LB Rolando McClain — He has 44 tackles, averaging 7.3 per game, and ranks 10th in the SEC. Linebacker was supposed to be a question mark for Alabama this season. McClain's play has made sure it hasn't been.
PK Leigh Tiffin — Tiffin is one of nine placekickers in the SEC who has not missed an extra point, but no one has attempted more than the 23 attempted and made by Tiffin.

INJURY WATCH:

Rebels
Coach Houston Nutt dismissed rumors about DE Greg Hardy being kicked off the team. Hardy was criticized for a subpar effort in the loss to South Carolina. "My phone blew up this weekend about his 'dismissal,' and his mom called me to ask if it was true, and I told her absolutely not," Nutt said. "I would probably tell Greg first and then the mom for sure. All that didn't happen. He had a great week last week."

Crimson Tide
LT Andre Smith missed last week with an undisclosed illness, but he is back on the practice field this week — along with everyone else. Saban said, "Everybody is healthy. So everybody is ready to go."

Predication - Bama vs Kentucky

The Crimson Tide is coming off a pretty severe beat down of Georgia in Athens. Coach Nick Saban has warned, until he is Crimson in his face, about complacency, especially against a Kentucky defense that allows only 5.5 points per game. The Kentucky defense, led by LB Braxton Kelley of LaGrange and Trevard Lindley of Hiram, is very good but honesty compels us to mention that the Wildcats haven’t really been tested in their non-conference schedule. Alabama plays big boy football and if the Tide protects QB John Parker Wilson, it should roll for most of the afternoon.

'Bama vs Kentucky Game Preview

THE COACHES:
Rich Brooks is in his sixth season at Kentucky with a record of 29-35 (.453) and 24th overall with a record of 120-144-4 (.455). The Wildcats' offensive coordinator is Joker Phillips and the defensive coordinator is Steve Brown.

Nick Saban is in his second season at Alabama with a record of 11-6 (.647) and 15th overall with a record of 117-65-1 (.642). The Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator is Jim McElwain and the defensive coordinator is Kirby Smart .

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN KENTUCKY HAS THE BALL:
Mike Hartline is in his first season as the starting quarterback. He had his best game against Middle Tennessee, completing 28 of 47 passes and two touchdowns, all career highs. Derrick Locke is the team's leading rusher with 190 yards, including a career-long 68-yard dash vs. Norfolk State. It was the longest TD run for UK since Quentin McCord's 80-yard TD in 1998. His 96 total yards were a career-high. Dicky Lyons leads the SEC in receptions per game, catching 6.25 passes per game.

Alabama is in the top 20 nationally in four defensive categories after five games this season. Junior college transfer Terrence Cody has also cast a large shadow for the Tide defense, the 6-5, 365-pound nose guard has 13 tackles on the season with 3.5 tackles for loss (-8) while also causing and recovering a fumble. Dont'a Hightower is fifth on the team in tackles with 19 stops - eight solo - in five games (3.8 tackles per game). Hightower has also forced one fumble and recovered two more to rank tied for third in the SEC at .40 per game.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN ALABAMA HAS THE BALL:
Jeremy Jarmon leads the team and is sixth in the SEC in tackles for loss this season with 5.5. Jarmon sacked WKU quarterback K.C. Black on the first play from scrimmage, his 15th career sack. The Wildcats linebackers are led by Braxton Kelley, who has 210 tackles in his career. Trevard Lindley has three pass breakups and two interceptions this season, tied for the team lead in both categories. Lindley is also just one pass breakup shy of the school career record (27).

John Parker Wilson completed 13-of-16 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown in Alabama's 41-30 win at #3 Georgia. Wilson completed his first seven passes of the game and was 10-of-11 for 139 yards and a TD in the first half while the Tide built a 31-0 halftime lead. Glen Coffee has 70 rushing attempts for 493 yards and four touchdowns and averages 98.0 yards per game, which ranks second in the SEC and 27th nationally. Julio Jones leads the team in receptions (16), receiving yards (226 or 45.2 per game) and touchdowns (4). Mark Ingram leads team with five touchdowns.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Tim Masthay led the SEC last season with 23 touchbacks and is on pace to smash that total as a league-high 15 of his 27 kicks have been touchbacks already this season. Masthay also is the team's and SEC's leading punter, averaging 45.7 yards per punt. Locke had a 100-yard kickoff return vs. WKU. He became just the fifth Wildcat in history to return a kickoff the length of the field.

P.J. Fitzgerald is averaging a career-best 41.8-yard per kick to rank sixth in the SEC with three punts inside the 20. Javier Arenas ranks fourth in the SEC and 15th nationally with a 18.67 yards per return average. His has 224 punt return yards, is the second-most total punt return yards in the nation.

Kentucky is no Push-Over!

Even though Alabama leads the all-time series 33-2-1, and won all eight previous meetings in Tuscaloosa, this is no time to take the Wildcats lightly.

Kentucky is also undefeated (4-0), leads the nation in scoring defense (5.5 points per game), and tops the conference in both sacks (two) and first downs allowed (45).

Last week against Western Kentucky, the Wildcats allowed just 15 passing yards. None of the first four opponents were able to record a rushing touchdown, and only three possessions reached the red zone).

“They are maybe the best defensive team in the country,” Saban said. “They have a lot of guys back from last year’s team. They are physical, they play with toughness, and they make good sound adjustments in what they do.”

Kentucky ranks second in the SEC in total defense, averaging 227.2 yards, and has allowed just 73.2 rushing yards per game (in comparison, Alabama has yielded 259.4 total yards and 54.0 rushing yards). The Wildcats are first in pass-efficiency defense, and have a turnover margin of plus-four.

No time for a letdown

'Bama Game takes a Toll on the Bulldogs!

If you watched the game you saw the intense hitting. Here are the results:

Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno could miss the team's next game against Tennessee on October 11 because of a bruised elbow.

Moreno was hurt during Saturday's 41-30 loss to Alabama. He managed only 34 yards on nine carries after entering the contest with an SEC-best 455 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

"Knowshon has got a chance to play in the next game, but he has a pretty good contusion on the elbow," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt on Sunday. "Ron [Courson, director of sports medicine] thinks there is a good possibility he'll play. We'll have to see how it heals."

Moreno wasn't the only injured Bulldog from Saturday, as tight ends Tripp Chandler and Bruce Figgins each sustained shoulder injuries and split end Kris Durham sprained an ankle.

Georgia RB Moreno may miss Tennessee game

'Bama AP #2

The Crimson Tide jumped to No. 2 in the Associated Press ranking on the strength of a dominating 41-30 victory over Georgia on national television on Saturday night. The No. 2 ranking represents the highest ranking for Alabama since 1993, when the Crimson Tide opened the season at No. 2 and stayed there for seven weeks before a 17-17 tie with Tennessee in Birmingham dropped the Tide to No. 4.

Alabama (5-0) was No. 3 at the beginning of the 2000 season and was ranked third for two consecutive weeks in 2005, but has been no higher since Gene Stallings stepped down as Alabama's coach in 1996.

Alabama had a little help from others as three top 10 teams lost in games this past week, then took care of the fourth by thrashing then No. 3 Georgia on ESPN Saturday night. The Tide's dominating 31-point lead at the half was enough to propel them past LSU and Texas, which won on Saturday, and Missouri, which was idle.

The win also garnered Alabama 21 first-place votes, leaving the Tide just 34 points behind top-ranked Oklahoma, but Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban wasn't prepared to lobby for a No. 1 ranking just yet.

"It doesn't matter where you are until the end," he said. "It's the only time it counts, does any good to be No. 1, is the way I look at it.
