Preseason Bowl Projections ...

SUGAR BOWL

Jan. 1, 2010 in New Orleans

Alabama (at large) vs. California (at large)

Two teams with at-large bids will meet in New Orleans. Though behind Florida in the SEC, Alabama may be even deeper than it was a season ago. There are question marks in the offensive backfield, but the defense is good enough to carry the Crimson Tide. If any team is talented enough to unseat U.S.C. in the Pac-10, it is California.

B.C.S. Bowl Projections

College Football’s Premier Power Conference - THE SEC!!!

College football’s premier power conference boasts the defending national champion, Florida, as well as four other teams in the A.P.’s top 13: Alabama, Louisiana State, Georgia and Mississippi.

The West is deep. Alabama enters Year 3 of the Nick Saban era looking to build upon last season’s success, which included a division title and a loss to Florida in the conference title game.

Game to Watch

L.S.U. at Alabama (Nov. 7)

Ranking the B.C.S. Conferences

Alabama vs Virginia Tech

Expect to see mirror images. The two teams are very similar. Both the Hokies and Crimson Tide win thanks to stout defense and ball-control offense.

Expect the Hokies to have trouble running the ball between the tackles against Terrence Cody and Alabama's front seven. Even though the Hokies have historically had success against a 3-4 defense (/looks at UVa), they haven't seen players like ones Alabama has.

Expect the Hokies to have some success getting pressure on Greg McElroy. Virginia Tech excels at getting pressure on the quarterback with its front four. Fortunately for the Hokies, the Crimson Tide are breaking in new offensive linemen and a new quarterback. Unfortunately for the Hokies, McElroy appears to be a good game manager and decision-maker. He'll have to get rid of the ball quickly but I expect him to make the right decision when he does. For the Hokies to have a chance, defensive end Jason Worilds has to have a helluva game.

Expect Julio Jones to be a difference maker. Alabama has the one thing the Hokies lack on offense: A deep threat at wide receiver. Stephan Virgil was impressive for Virginia Tech last year as the field cornerback. However, he is moving to the boundary this year, meaning he'll have to play more man coverage.

Expect the Hokies to lose if Tyrod Taylor is forced to win the game. Not because Tyrod is incapable of taking the team on his shoulders, but because the Hokies aren't having success with their offensive game plan if he is.

Hokies win if: They are able to get pressure on the quarterback ... they force turnovers ... they turn those turnovers into points ... they not turn the ball over ... they aren't intimidated by the Tide like another ACC team was last season.

Crimson Tide win if: They play remotely like they did against Clemson in last year's opener.

Complete 2009 Virginia Tech Football: Alabama Game Guide

GAME WEEK is Here! Bama vs VT !!

- Alabama's defense has gotten faster and deeper, hoping to control the line with the front three or four, and using the back seven in multiple ways to neutralize offensive schemes.

- Expect McElroy to be a “game manager” in this first contest.

- Plenty of talented running backs (Ingram, Richardson, Grant & Upchurch).

- Wide receiver position begins with Julio Jones. Don't forget the big guys at TE, especially Colin Peek.

- P.J. Fitzgerald has gotten off 88 consecutive punts since he last had one blocked.

- CB Kareem Jackson has played in all 27 games since he arrived at the University of Alabama.

- "Mount Cody" wants to prove he can be an every-down player this year. Here is his first chance to do that.

- Game Plan? Ball control and defense.

What a backfield Rotation the Tide has.. RTR

Alabama is expecting to play as many as four tailbacks against Virginia Tech, including true freshman Trent Richardson, Saban said.

Sophomore Mark Ingram, senior Roy Upchurch and junior Terry Grant could all figure into the rotation.

Mark Barron to start at Safety?

It would appear that hard-hitting sophomore Mark Barron will be the guy trotting out to one of two safety spots when the Alabama defense takes the field against Virginia Tech next Saturday.

More Preseaon SEC Predictions ...

SEC East: Florida Even if you say that Florida is going to be down this year from last year and that the loss of Percy Harvin is going to hurt them tremendously, please find me one loss on their SEC schedule, nevermind two. They avoid their one stumbling block of Ole Miss this year and they avoid Alabama. They get LSU with an unproven QB on the road and they get the cocktail party against UGA's new offense.

SEC West: Alabama Speaking of LSU & Bama, it's flip a coin with them or Bama or take the hyped up Ole Miss squad. Ole Miss has the proven QB but Bama and LSU have the talent coming in on a year to year basis. I'm not comfortable picking Ole Miss to pull off the little upset, and Bama simply put has a way easier schedule than LSU.

SEC Winner: Florida 24 Bama 20, In a rematch of last years SEC title game, the Crimson Tide will once again come up short against the Gators.

2009 College Football Season Predictions

Will RB Eddie Lacy Redshirt?

RB Eddie Lacy was "in a scout team jersey on Thursday which is a fairly strong indication that the freshman is not likely to be in the playing rotation against the Hokies. Injuries can change things instantly, but with practice repetitions going to the top backs once game weeks begin, it could be tough for Lacy to see the field unless in a special teams role."

Mt. Cody at War with the Flu...

Senior nose guard Terrence Cody missed his second consecutive practice Thursday!

Cody said "he hasn't eaten in two days."

"I don't think everybody's wiped out. Just a couple guys. Guys just got to stay clean. We're all right. It's just the flu. It's not any worse than practice. ... Don't tell anybody I said that. I'm just playing."

Injury Updates ....

- Wide receiver Kenny Bell missed another practice with shin splints, but he was the only player wearing a black jersey that signified an injury.

- Terrence Cody was not at practice. He was sick, according to a media relations staff spokesperson.

Tide eager to turn its attention toward Hokies

Colin Peek Update ....

Ten days before the season opener against Virginia Tech that will be his first live game since 2007, Peek says that he "feels wonderful out there," words of fortitude that ignore two screws that will be in his foot for the rest of his life.

Peek played two years and redshirted in 2006 with the Yellow Jackets, which means this one season with the Crimson Tide might be it for him. As he said weeks ago: "You're going to have to kill me to get me off the field."

Update on Jones & Ingram ...

The NCAA's role in this investigation has been only as an advisor to determine Alabama's proper course of action. The fact that a UA compliance official has spoken to a NCAA representative about this very topic -- as The Tuscaloosa News reported Sunday -- should actually bolster fans' confidence that no violation is there, since UA self-imposed no penalties after exploring all avenues to make sure that conclusion would be well-received. This type of investigation is more common at major programs than most would realize. Compliance officials look into everything. It's just that most in-house investigations and subsequent consultations with the SEC/NCAA don't become public like this one has.

Top Players to Watch in the SEC .....

1. Flordia - Tim Tebow
2. Tennessee - Eric Berry
3. Alabama - Rolando McClain

There are certain players who have a “presence” when they take the field. You know the first time you see them play that they are going to be special. When I saw Rolando McClain start his first game against Western Carolina two years ago, I knew he was one of those players. Playing middle linebacker in the SEC is a job for grown men and McClain has excelled at the position in his first two years with 169 total tackles. This season, with the departure of safety Rashad Johnson, McClain is going to have to take on an additional role as the leader of the Crimson Tide defense. I picked Alabama to win the SEC West because of its defense. McClain is the best player on that defense and one of the best in the country.
4. Georgia - A.J. Green
5. Kentucky - Trevard Lindley

Five SEC Players I Would Pay To See

Update on Mt. Cody ...

Cody doesn't want to come off the field so often this season.

How's that coming? Well. ...

More Preseason Predictions ....

ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide won 12 games last year. However, the last four times the team has garnered double-digit win seasons, it finished below .500 the following campaign with a combined 17-31 record. Alabama covered its last three games in '08 when favored by three touchdowns or more.

Offense - Last year's offense was a veteran-laden squad and it showed as the club topped the 30-ppg mark for the first time since 1989. Nevertheless, the unit still ranked 63rd nationally in total offense and now moves forward with only four returning starters. Greg McElroy, who takes over at QB, has completed 16 of 20 career attempts, but 15 of those passes came against Western Kentucky and Western Carolina. The o-line also loses three key starters.

Defense - It will be up to the defense to carry the offense early on and that shouldn't be a problem with 13 of the top 16 tacklers returning to Tuscaloosa. Still, the "D" allowed seven red zone TDs in the final two games after giving up only seven in the first 12. Additionally, the entire defense lost just two starts to injury the entire season, and with a rebuilt o-line and an inexperienced QB, the unit will be on the field a lot more in '09.

Outlook - It's doubtful this squad will fall apart as the other 'Bama teams did the year following a double-digit win season. However, the club won't win 10 games either. Look for eight victories with a .500 SEC mark.

VT Hokies .. Injury Update ...

"The Hokies' injury woes continue at running back. After losing starter Darren Evans for the year to a knee injury, Virginia Tech now is dealing with injuries to the top three tailbacks behind Evans.

Tailback Ryan Williams sprained his ankle during Saturday's scrimmage to join David Wilson (sprained shoulder) and Josh Oglesby (foot infection, hamstring). None of the ailments are considered serious."

So what's the latest from Virginia Tech?

'Bama Running a "Wild-Cat Formation"?????

"Defensive end Terrell Richardson said his younger brother, Alabama freshman running back Trent Richardson, is working at quarterback in the Crimson Tide's Wildcat formation."

Trent Richardson at QB?

Tide to win it All?

Toughest Games: No. 7 Virginia Tech (Sept. 5), at No. 8 Ole Miss (Oct. 10), No. 11 LSU (Nov. 7)

Why the Crimson Tide will win it all: The run defense, which finished ranked No. 2 in the country last year, should be even better this season. Like Texas' pass defense in the Big 12, that bodes well in the run-happy SEC.

Once again, Alabama will fly under the radar early, but look out if it manages to get by Ole Miss, because the schedule, while tough, isn't killer.

Why they won't: Greg McElroy has to be the same type of quarterback that John Parker Wilson was last year: don't make mistakes and manage the offense well. The Crimson Tide also need to replace offensive tackle Andre Smith and running back Glen Coffee.

Analysis: why top five college football teams will (or won't) win it All

Injury Update ...

The Crimson Tide football team escaped Saturday’s second and final scrimmage of the preseason without any serious injuries.

Small injuries continue to mount:

- Julio Jones twisted his ankle

- Trent Richardson sprained his shoulder

- Running back Roy Upchurch, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and wide receiver Kenny Bell were held out of competition on Saturday with various injuries, also of the less-than-serious variety.

Jones & Ingram under Investigation?

The University of Alabama has not self-reported any NCAA violations related to a spring fishing excursion taken by football players Julio Jones and Mark Ingram, but at least one member of the UA compliance staff has flown to Indianapolis to discuss the situation with NCAA enforcement representatives, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.

UA's investigation determined Anderson is NOT an athletic booster. Student-athletes accepting benefits from a booster, defined as a representative of a school's athletic interests, would be considered a possible major institutional violation of NCAA rules.

UA also determined the excursion DID NOT violate NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2.1.6, which prohibits student-athletes from receiving extra benefits due to their status or reputation as athletes.

This entire ordeal is a joke. If the NCAA has any sense, which I doubt, they will laugh this one off and move on to something that actually matters! What a waste of time.

UA has met with NCAA on Jones, Ingram matter

Misc Final Scrimmage Tid-Bits ....

- McElroy completed 23 of 44 passes for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 66-yard strike to Ingram.

- Grant 72 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 49-yard burst.

- Trent Richardson, 8 rush, 23 yards.

- Dont’a Hightower, 8 tackles and added 1 sack.

Sure a Thing in the SEC???

My blog is dedicated to the Crimson Tide, however, every now and then I read a story that I just have to comment on. This is one of those instances..

Here are a few excerpts from Smooth sailing for Florida in SEC East:

- Should the SEC East even bother playing games this season?

- Shouldn't SEC commissioner Michael Slive just hand the SEC East trophy to defending national champion Florida on Sept. 5?

- The SEC should just cancel the Gators' five games against SEC East opponents and let them schedule a few more contests against FCS and Sun Belt Conference foes.

- There hasn't been this sure a thing in the SEC in a long, long time.

- The SEC East is nothing more than a formality for Florida.

I hope that Georgia, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky all get a chance to read this article. I am a die hard Alabama Fan, but one thing is for sure, there ARE NO SURE THINGS IN THE SEC!!!

All I can hope is that 'Bama gets a rematch with Florida in Atlanta. RTR

'Bama? Don't be shocked if this Year's Team is Better than Last Year!!!

Last year's team came a heartbeat away from playing for the national championship. This year, don't be shocked, but 'Bama will likely be in the National Championship debate again. Why?

Alabama has superstars like WR Julio Jones, DT Terrence Cody, and LB Rolando McClain returning, but there's an influx of superior talent from the last two tremendous recruiting classes that has upgraded the overall talent level. True freshmen Trent Richardson (running back) and Dre Kirkpatrick (corner) are just two elite players that Saban has brought in to potentially shine right away.

What to Watch on Offense: Greg McElory

What to Watch on Defense: Run Defense

Key player to a successful season: Junior OT James Carpenter

Update OL Kellen Williams ...

True freshman offensive lineman Kellen Williams, who wasn’t cleared for the start of training camp due to a knee injury but joined the team Wednesday, is still several weeks away from being a “full go.”

Upshaw Avoids Suspension ...

Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw will be disciplined internally and will not be suspended following his Wednesday night arrest for misdemeanor domestic violence, UA coach Nick Saban said.

RB Updates ....

"I'm really, really pleased with (how) Mark Ingram has had a fantastic camp, and Trent Richardson has had a fantastic camp and done a really good job," Saban said. "So has Terry Grant, so there's a lot of competition at that position."

"We've got three, four, five backs that can go out and give you something different," Ingram said. "We're all big, strong, fast guys. Roy has got little shake and is explosive. Trent is fast, strong. He's got the full package. Terry Grant is a speed guy, real fast. We've just got a lot of different guys that can do a lot of different things."

Receivers Maze & Jones....

- Receiver Marquis Maze missed a recent practice before returning Thursday.

- Julio Jones didn't miss time even though he "sprained his ankle a little bit," according to Saban.

Update Dre Kirkpatrick ....

Freshman cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has missed the past two practices with what coach Nick Saban called a "pulled muscle."

Update ... Eddie Lacy

Eddie Lacy has looked sharp throughout camp in ball drills, though more tentative in blocking drills. He's shown no signs of the knee tendinitis that hampered him in the offseason. Lacy's 7-yard average in Saturday's scrimmage (3 for 21) was the best among the ball carriers who were noted on UA-released statistics, but it remains unclear where Lacy stands among the depth at running back.

?? Roy Upchurch

Senior tailback Roy Upchurch was not in attendance during the media's viewing period. Saban will probably shed some light on that one.

Courtney Upshaw (LB) Arrrested Last Night ...

Both Upshaw, 19, and his girlfriend, University of Alabama student Kendall Lynn Grzyb, 19, were arrested Wednesday night by a University of Alabama police officer who witnessed the two arguing and then fighting near the student recreation center.

The two students were booked in Tuscaloosa County on a third-degree domestic violence/harassment charge. Jail records there show his bond set at $500.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has not yet issued a statement. He is scheduled to meet with the news media following this afternoon's practice.

Tide linebacker Courtney Upshaw, girlfriend arrested after Domestic Dispute

Starting Offensive Line????

It would appear, as it has been for the last couple of weeks, that the 1st Team Offensive Line will be;

- Carpenter at left tackle (2nd McCullough)
- Mike Johnson at left guard (2nd Anthony Steen)
- William Vlachos at center (2nd David Ross)
- Barrett Jones at right guard (2nd John Michael Boswell)
- Drew Davis at right tackle (2nd Tyler Love or Brian Motley)

Where's D.J. Fluker? DJ is seeing time at both left tackle and right tackle now.

Tide’s projected No. 1 left tackle still getting Pushed to Improve

The Roster Expands to 105 ...

Classes began at the University of Alabama on Wednesday, pushing the Crimson Tide to a later (3:30 p.m.) practice time with a larger roster.

- The Tide, which had been working with five quarterbacks, now has seven.

- Chris Vines, a former quarterback at Pelham High School, who signed with the Atlanta Braves in '03 only to have his career end in '06.

- Offensive line signee Kellen Williams of Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga. Williams, who was wearing No. 63 and working with the offensive line, had knee surgery after suffering an injury in a charity basketball game and did not report with the original 105 players on hand when practice opened Aug. 5.

Alabama will take a step back this year after its surprising resurgence in 2008.

Tide guard MIKE JOHNSON says: "It would be easy for people to see that we've lost our quarterback and a great running back and some guys in key spots and think we're not going to be the same team. But we've got young guys who are unbelievably talented and ready to play. We've got Coach (Nick) Saban pushing us day after day. We are not the team that lost those last two games last year. We are the team that won those first 12."

SEC Predictions

Injury - Kenny Bell (WR) ...

True freshman wide receiver Kenny Bell is suffering from "real bad" shin splints, according to Saban, who said Bell will be in a walking boot for about a week before being reevaluated. At the very least, that is a clear setback for Bell, who is competiting at a position where the Crimson Tide goes 10-deep with scholarship guys.

DJ Fluker Update ...

Fluker is reportedly adjusting to the tempo, and many of my sources familiar with what's going on in practice have said that, “he’s really stepped his game up.”

Sources close to Crimson Confidential’s staff emphasize the improvements that Fluker is making. They are saying he is looking more and more like a starting offensive lineman the more practice he gets.

2009 Bronco Nagurski Watch List & 2009 Rotary Lombardi Watch List

Alabama defensive stalwarts – Javier Arenas, Terrence Cody and Rolando McClain – were named to the 2009 Bronco Nagurski Watch List. The award is presented annually to the best defensive player in college football by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte (N.C.) Touchdown Club.

In addition, senior offensive lineman Mike Johnson and sophomore linebacker Dont’a Hightower joined Cody and McClain on the 2009 Rotary Lombardi Watch List. The award is presented annually to the nation’s best lineman – offense or defense – and linebackers by the Rotary Club of Houston. The SEC had 24 players on the Lombardi preseason watch list.

Crimson Tide Wraps up Fall Camp

I Usually Don't Do Auburn Tiger Posts, But.....

Auburn University announced Monday that the football team will be featured on a weekly 30-minute reality TV show beginning in the fall.

Imagine what a show following the Tigers could have given viewers last season. With the infighting among assistant coaches and the quarterback battle that split the team into two factions, the producers of this reality show would likely have won an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

Auburn football gets its own reality TV show

Sal Sunseri - Bama's LB Coach ...

I have read several articles this year about Sal and from what I've read he is one intense coach. Kind of reminds me of a Drill Sergeant I had in the Army. Here's a small excerpt from an article I read this morning...

Roaring through a sleepy Monday morning is a determined man on crutches, bellowing R-rated phrases that resonate beyond the fences of Alabama's practice field.

New assistant coach Sal Sunseri is drilling outside linebackers on how to shed a block and get into the backfield. Apparently, none are doing it right. Sunseri eventually drops a crutch, hobbles over on bad knee cartilage and angrily slings aside a blocker as a quick demonstration of the technique he wants to see duplicated.

"That can't be stopped!" he shouts.

Crimson Tide wants to Turn Up Pressure

Running Back Depth is pretty Consistant ...

#1 - Mark Ingram is #1.

#2 - Roy Upchurch is the #2 back. Quietly getting the job done.

#3 - Trent Richardson is still learning what it takes to compete in the SEC as a back. All indications are that once Trent adjusts to the SEC Game, LOOK OUT!

Left Guard, 2nd Team? Anthony Steen?

Freshman Anthony Steen has been recently working as left guard on the second offensive line group. Steen played at a private school in Mississippi, but at 6-foot-3, 305-pounds, he certainly has the size to be competitive at the collegiate level.

2. Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin
3. Alabama head coach Nick Saban
He won't win any Mr. Congeniality contests, and he hasn't made the smoothest exits from Michigan State, LSU and the Miami Dolphins. But Saban wins games, and as long as he keeps things up, he'll be loved in Alabama.

4. The BCS
5. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany

Top five villains in College Football

Other Player Updates....

Dre Kirkpatrick (DB) - There is a great deal of experience ahead of Kirkpatrick among the veterans, so don’t expect to see too much too quickly. He’s not likely to knock Kareem Jackson or Javier Arenas out of a job in the regular defense.

A.J. McCarron (QB) - So far in camp, there is nothing to suggest McCarron isn’t a legit candidate for the No.2 quarterback job.

Kevin Norwood (WR) - Saban said, "while Norwood may not be a better talent than his fellow incomers at the position, he has shown the maturity to handle camp circumstances better than others".

Trent Richardson (RB) - Trent's current place in the pecking order is dicey business, but he appears to be just behind UA’s three veterans at the position.

Nico Johnson (LB) - Impressive in drills, but his weakside position is as tough a mental adjustment as a physical one.

DJ Fluker UPDATE ...

His size and strength are all that was advertised, but is currently working as a reserve at right tackle.

(Source - rivals.yahoo.com)

Offensive Line, Left Tackle UPDATE ...

The left tackle job is James Carpenter’s to lose at this point.

Meanwhile, the anticipated battle between Carpenter and five-star freshman D.J. Fluker hasn’t even brewed. If individual drills are any indication, his primary competition is not Fluker, but rather redshirt freshman Tyler Love.

Right Guard - Barrett Jones ??

Alabama redshirt freshman Barrett Jones was first up at right guard during Saturday's scrimmage, according to Nick Saban.

"He has been doing the best job today, to this point," Saban said, "but we've got a lot of competition at a lot of positions."

Jones, a former blue-chip prospect from Memphis, began practicing with the first team during the previous week. Sophomore Alfred McCullough temporarily held the spot earlier this preseason.

Sum it up! Scrimmage #1

"I think the biggest thing from this scrimmage that I would take from it is our first two units executed fairly well in what they did," Saban said. "After that, we did not have the consistency in performance and ability to execute, sustain and play the way we want to play as a football team." - Nick Saban

The usual suspects shine in Crimson Tide's first preseason scrimmage

Scrimmage #1 ....

The best part of Scrimmage #1 is?

Saban didn't reference any injuries, and all accounts are that Alabama made it unscathed through the first of two preseason scrimmages.

- Greg McElroy - 17 for 29, 188 yards, 1 TD, 0 Int
- AJ McCarron - 6 for 14, 21 yards, 0 TD, 1 Int

- Julio Jones - 6 rec. 100 yards, 1 TD
- Kevin Norwood - 3 rec., 60 yards, 1 TD

- Rolando McClain (LB) - 8 tackles
- Dont'a Hightower (LB) - 7 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU

I think that Mark Ingram will be the starting RB & Trent Richardson will see allot of playing time as the season progresses.

A.J. McCarron is the front-runner for the #2 QB spot.

Safety & RG are still wide open. I do agree that Boswell appears to be the front-runner for the RG spot.

Alabama Team Report

Trent Richardson ....

"Freshman running back Trent Richardson looked sharp during Friday’s practice. He, as well as the other running backs, put an emphasis on protecting the ball. Richardson coughed up a fumble during an 11-on-11 drill at last Sunday’s Fan Day practice.

Richardson also looked very good in receiving drills, running clean routes and grabbing every ball with his hands, away from his body."

Up to the Challenge?

This is an excerpt from Chris Low's interview with Coach Saban.

Coach Saban was asked, "how have you seen this team respond to that challenge"? Challenge refers to sustaining last years gains and continuing to build a national power. Here was Coach Saban's response:

"We did a kickoff coverage drill on the first or second day of camp and have just about everybody on the team on it except the quarterbacks and offensive linemen. I pointed out in the meeting to the players that Rolando McClain, Julio Jones and Javier Arenas, the three guys who got their picture in the paper for being preseason All-America, were the three guys that were the best guys running down on the kickoff cover team and they don't even do it. That's what your team has to understand. Look at these guys. They're running down because of the pride they have and they want to be the best at everything they do. That's why they're good, and that's why they sustain being good all the time".

Did you Know????

RB Trent Richardson was recently clocked at running a 4.47 40-yard dash. At 230 lbs., that’s ridiculous.

Update on TE Colin Peek....

Peek reported for August drills still nursing a fracture in his left foot that has been slow to heal. Thus, Tide coaches are limiting him to one practice a day when the squad reports for multiple workouts.

He's done good with his foot. Yet we don't want to create an over-use problem where he can't continue to work to get better.

Many of the articles I have read suggest that if Fluker earns the RT spot, then Davis will move to RG. If Davis stays at RT, RG is open for competition between DJ Fluker, Barrett Jones, Alfred McCullough, Chance Warmack, Anthony Steen, Brian Motley and John Michael Boswell.

WILLIAM VLACHOS on freshman OL D.J. Fluker

"Obviously, his talent is undeniable. He's huge, and all that. But his willingness to learn has really impressed me. He asks tons of questions of the film room. He's always asking me to stay late with him and watch stuff and go over things. A guy with that much hype and expectations, it's surprising to see them work as hard and be as motivated as they are."

Upset Possibilities in the SEC...

“Trap Games?” Those are games that may not look difficult on the surface, but when combined with travel, the opponent the previous week, or some other factors, it becomes a game where the favored teams could trip up.

#2 Tennessee at Alabama, Oct. 24

Under normal circumstances this would probably be a comfortable win for the Crimson Tide. But Alabama has the big showdown at Ole Miss on Oct. 10. Then the Tide hosts South Carolina on Oct. 17. Alabama will get a week off on Oct. 31 in order to rest up for the big home game with LSU on Nov. 7. But before that week off they host Tennessee. The Alabama players will be looking forward to that week off after playing eight straight Saturdays. Tennessee will be rested after a week off and Lane Kiffin will probably still be looking for his first big win. What better way to get it than to beat one of your oldest rivals?

The SEC’s top five “Trap Games”

Dont'a Hightower

- 1st Team Freshman All-American last season.

- A natural to rush the passer, packing 260 pounds with great burst off the edge and the strength to fight off blockers.

- Poised to be one of the best linebackers in the SEC this season.

- He's just a Sophomore!!

Alabama Julio Jones

"Jones started all 14 games for the Tide as a true freshman and set every rookie receiving record along the way. He finished the season with 58 receptions for 946 yards and four touchdowns last year as a true freshman. He was a first-team freshman All-American and the Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club National Freshman of the Year in 2008. He was also the 2008 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year."

More Predictions...

Don't you just love all of the preseason predictions? Here's another one ..

"Three All-Americans are gone, but the expectations have only heightened for the Tide. 'Bama got the ball rolling with an eye-catching upset over Clemson last season in Atlanta. This time Saban's team opens against Virginia Tech in the same venue trying to set the tone again. There are some question marks-particularly left tackle-but the problem is experience, not talent after two straight top recruiting classes. Other issues include finding a go-to running back and more playmaking receivers behind Jones. Toughest road test not counting the neutral-site game comes at Mississippi on Oct. 10. Recent 'Bama teams haven't been able to duplicate double-digit wins, going a combined 17-31 in the following season in four tries since 1996."

Trent Richardson Update ...

Saban was asked about the progress of freshman running back Trent Richardson.

"Trent's getting a lot of work,'' he said. "He's going to develop into an important part of the team. But Roy Upchurch and Mark Ingram and Terry Grant are really doing well, too. I can't tell you what's going to happen in a month. I'll wait and see. If we have four guys that can play winning fotobll at that position, I have no problem with that.''

Week #1 Predictions ..

Virginia Tech edges Alabama in a close, low-scoring battle. The difference between the two teams ends up being the playmaking ability of Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

2009 national college football preview- 1st

The Tide's QB's ...

Star Jackson - The physical tools are there. Jackson has the size, the arm strength, and more speed than any Alabama QB we’ve seen in a while. The problem is mental.

AJ McCarron - A true freshman that has been nothing short of outstanding in summer workouts and the few days of fall camp.

Greg McElroy - The depth chart starts here.

Previewing the Tide — Quarterback

Did you know?????

"Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones played more than half of the 2008 season with a sports hernia that eventually required surgery. On top of that, he injured a wrist and a shoulder (and needed more off-season surgery) against Tennessee. Visualize some of the catches that he made after those injuries, like the decisive overtime catch that set up the winning Alabama touchdown against LSU in Baton Rouge. Now imagine Jones making that play, or others like it, with three serious injuries nagging at him."

Practice Tid-Bits Day #5

The heat index reached well over 100 degrees as the Crimson Tide worked out for more than two hours Monday afternoon. Today begins the grueling period of two-a-days for the team.

- Freshman tackle D.J. Fluker is big, but he doesn't appear ready to step in at left tackle.

- Davis, who started at right tackle last season, has been receiving repetitions recently at right guard as Alabama continues to try to find the right fit to replace departed right guard Marlon Davis.

- Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick looks like the real deal.

- Offensive lineman Tyler Love has been working with the second group at left tackle behind James Carpenter.

- Greg McElroy looked sharp with almost all of his throws as he looks to secure a starting role for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama #3 - SEC Power Rankings

1. Florida
2. Ole Miss ?????
3. Alabama
I could easily see the Crimson Tide winning the West this season. Their defense should be one of the best in the country, and you know Saban will have this team ready to play every week. But whereas the Crimson Tide leaned on their offensive line a year ago, I'm not sure they will have that luxury in 2009. Not that they will be bad up front. I just don't see them being dominant. Then again, stud receiver Jones is the great equalizer.

Last Update on Former 'Bama Backer Brandon Fanney

Fanney signed with Alabama in 2004. He redshirted in 2005 and played in just one game in 2006. He played in 10 games and had seven tackles in 2007, but started all 14 games last season. He recorded nine tackles for losses and one sack.

Fanney will play defensive end at UNA, which is very similar to the linebacker position he played at Alabama.

Fanney joins Lions

Alabama: RB Trent Richardson

"Everyone wants to know about massive freshman offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, but expecting a guy who never played offensive line before 2008 to step into the left tackle job the way Andre Smith did as a true freshman in 2006 is asking a lot. It's more likely Richardson, a 220-pound bruiser from Pensacola, Fla., will earn some carries as the Crimson Tide try to replace Glen Coffee. Richardson will compete with sophomore Mark Ingram and senior Roy Upchurch".

Tid-Bits on Greg McElory

- Business marketing major received his diploma Saturday to finish his undergraduate degree in three years with a 3.85 grade-point average.

- 6'3" at 220LB's

- He blew past his bench-press goal of 350 pounds to max out at 370 pounds. The plan, said McElroy, who also did power-cleans to improve leg strength, was to add bulk to “withstand the drudgery and the impact of the season.”

- Attended the 2009 Manning Passing Academy.

- Tight end Colin Peek said there is a considerable difference between the McElroy who won the starting job in spring practice to the McElroy who is leading the way this August.

Practice Tid-Bits Day #4

- DL Kerry Murphy, who returned to the team on Sunday, from hiatus because of the death of his brother.

- Interesting OL shifts continue. Yesterday RT Drew Davis practiced at right guard and freshman D.J. Fluker at right tackle.

- Crimson Tide gets serious tomorrow, straping on full pads for a 2:30 p.m. practice.

Alabama's Practice Hits: Fan Day edition

- Sophomore wide receiver Maze took snaps opposite Julio Jones.

Tid-Bits from the USA Today Coaches Poll ...

Alabama getting the nod over Ohio State isn't bad, and considering the Tide's relatively easy schedule, for the SEC, Nick Saban's club should be in a great spot to hover around the national title debate all season long. Of course, getting by No. 7 ranked Virginia Tech to start the season will be Job One, and with the high preseason ranking, the Hokies can rocket into BCS Championship discussion with a win in the season opener. Frank Beamer's club is in position to do big things.

Breaking Down the First Coaches' poll

OL "Tweaking" Continues - Practice Day #2

Offensive line coach Joe Pendry appears to have carried the spring philosophy of trying multiple players at multiple spots into the fall.

Brian Motley, a right guard this spring, took snaps at center Friday. Meanwhile, Alfred McCullough stepped in with the first group at right guard. Former Foley star D.J. Fluker appears to have worked at left and right tackle to this point, while fellow freshman Anthony Steen has started out at left guard.

Injury Update: TE Colin Peek

Alabama tight end Colin Peek plans to play his senior season with a fracture in his left foot that stubbornly refuses to heal.

A 6-foot-6 transfer from Georgia Tech, Peek is expected to be one of the top pass-catching targets in the Crimson Tide's offense this season. After sitting out the 2008 regular season because of NCAA transfer guidelines, Peek was cleared to play in the Sugar Bowl but ultimately did not because of the foot injury.

Peek wore a protective boot on his left foot after practice Friday.

"Tweaking" of the OL has Begun

The offensive line seems to be the biggest concern. Bama is in Day #2 of fall practice and the "tweaking" of the OL has begun;

William Vlachos and Brian Motley, practiced at center and right guard, respectively, were running drills in returning starter Mike Johnson’s group Thursday, sophomore Alfred McCullough was running at right guard with Vlachos and Drew Davis on Friday.

Highly-touted freshman D.J. Fluker was running at both tackle spots, with Motley at center and freshman David Williams at right guard.

- Nico Johnson and Tana Patrick practiced tonight with the inside linebackers.

- Dre Kirkpatrick has the size, speed and looked awfully capable in one-on-one drills at his first collegiate practice.

- Defensive lineman Darrington Sentimore was practicing with the team, which is allowable even though the Louisiana native has yet to receive approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse.

- Quarterback A.J. McCarron looked sharp in drill work as one of only two passers at the practice.

- Noseguard Kerry Murphy was not present at practice for the most tragic of reasons, the death of his older brother in Bessemer in what police are treating as a homocide.

3 Grayshirts willl be ...

Saban added that "three potential guys" out of the 2009 signing class are set to grayshirt, a move that would delay their enrollment to January without them counting toward the 85-man limit this season. Expected grayshirts are offensive lineman Darius McKeller, defensive end Anthony Orr and linebacker Petey Smith.

Offensive lineman Kellen Williams was also not listed on the 105-man roster because of a knee injury suffered after signing day, but he is expected on the team this fall.

I've said it before, Colin Peek is going to be a huge asset to this years team. Vince Ferrara from the Examiner.com agrees and I quote " TE Colin Peek (6’6) lined up next to RT Drew Davis (6’7) is a unique and daunting combo. I love Colin Peek. I think he’s going to be the go-to target in the passing game after Julio Jones."

AGM 2009 Preseason Top 25 Poll

Here's another preseason poll... According to this poll, Bama's #12 in the Nation.

The Tide almost put together a hell of a season last year when they jumped out to a 12-0 start. However, a 0-2 finish on the biggest stages brought Bama fans crashing back to reality. This year, Nick Saban and company will look to finish what they started. The key will be getting their offensive line to become the road graters they were at the beginning of the 2008 season. If the offensive line can open a few holes the Crimson Tide have the backs and the power running game that will chew up clock and dominate opponents, couple that with an always talented Saban defense and Alabama could be dangerous in 2009. To start the season the goal will be win the SEC and let the chips fall where they may.

Alabama Ticket Waiting List Surpasses 10,000 ...

Alabama which does not use public money to subsidize athletics, isn't spending foolishly. According to figures filed with the U.S. Department of Education, Alabama has a football season-ticket waiting list of more than 10,000, and football-only revenue topped $57 million for the 2007-08 school year.

Earlier this year, the Alabama state university system's trustees approved earlier a $80.6 million project that will expand Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium to accommodate more than 101,000 fans. Alabama's stadium expansion should more than pay for itself.

James Carpenter

I did a post last week on James Carpenter and how valuable he will be on the OL this year. Here is some more on James....

"Carpenter isn’t the pure brute at left tackle that Andre Smith brought to the table for three seasons, but he is a smart, instinctive lineman that could easily move down to guard or over to right tackle if Fluker, a more prototype athlete for the left side, is ready to play immediately. Another JUCO gem for Saban and his staff.”
